His father Thomas Kostner played in the Italian league and was an assistant coach for the Italian junior national team. Also related to Erwin Kostner.
Diego Kostner came to Switzerland in 2007 in order to improve. He spent many years playing in Switzerland, both as a junior and senior. A hard-working and eager player with decent defensive awareness in his younger days. Became part of the Italian national team just like his father.

Son père Thomas Kostner a lui aussi été joueur de hockey de haut niveau, en championnat d'Italie, international italien et fut ensuite adjoint chez les U20 italiens. Erwin Kostner est également de la famille.
Avec cette parenté, Diego baigna dans le hockey. À 15 ans, il partit en Suisse pour progresser davantage que chez lui et finit par percer dans les rangs de la formation du HC Lugano avant d'apparaître chez eux en séniors puis de rejoindre Ambrì-Piotta.
Ailier travailleur, responsable défensivement très tôt dans sa carrière. Devenu international italien comme quasiment tous les Kostner.
