His father played hockey in the Finnish elite league. Favorite team growing up was KalPa and Jari Kurri was his favorite player.
Big sized center with good presence up the middle. Decent face-off man. Above average hands and the instincts of a natural goal-scorer. Pretty much the complete package when motivated. Leadership skills improved with age. Better scorer than playmaker. Overall game lacked consistency in some seasons.
Finnish rookie of the year in 1997. Started The South Florida Hockey Academy together with Czechs Radek Dvořák, Tomas Vokoun and Petr Sýkora.
Played his last game in 2015. Officially announced his retirement on March 7, 2017. Worked as an expert for Finnish television.
Named best coach in Liiga during his first year behind the bench in 2021/22.

Fils d'un hockeyeur du championnat finlandais des années 1970-80 (Matti Jokinen), il fut formé au KalPa Kuopio qui resta son club favori, et prit Jari Kurri comme modèle.
Centre extrêmement puissant, bon aux mises au jeu et dont la présence dans l'enclave est difficile à ignorer. Sa technique lui a permis d'être buteur prolifique, passeur correct et atout défensif, du moins quand il était d'humeur. Il a souvent manqué de régularité et de fiabilité. Son caractère s'est affirmé avec le temps et l'expérience NHL, où il aura passé pas loin de vingt saisons.
Élu meilleur débutant du championnat finlandais en 1997. Il a fondé la South Florida Hockey Academy avec Radek Dvořák, Tomas Vokoun et Petr Sýkora. Joue son dernier match en 2015 avec St.Louis, à 36 ans, mais attend le 7 mars 2017 pour annoncer sa retraite officielle.
750 points marqués (321+429) en 1231 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
Expert pour la télévision finlandaise, avant le match et pendant les pauses aux championnats du monde.
Meilleur entraîneur de Liiga dès sa première année comme coach en 2021/22.
