Nicknamed "Katze" (The Cat) for his smoothness and quickness. Sometimes his first name was spelled as "Günther".
At 17 he was an apprentice in state-owned Elektro-Apparate-Werke in Berlin-Treptow and watched his factory team - BSG Motor Treptow - play an ice hockey game. He was so thrilled he asked to join the team and soon became their goaltender.
When he was recruited by leading German team Dynamo Weißwasser he became GDR champion three years in a row.
When East Germany lost the Olympic qualification game vs their Western counterpart he was among three players who were supposed to join an unified German team but the authorities never reached an agreement. Katzur was frustrated to miss his Olympic chance.
Left East Germany in 1960 and went on to play in West Germany for Miesbach, and for Mannheim from 1962 to 1968. Played one game for West Germany in 1964/65.
Joined BFC Preußen in 1968. When the club merged with Berliner SC in 1971 there were six goaltenders available but veteran Katzur astounded anyone by getting the #1 spot and helping the team to move up to Bundesliga, which was a successful retirement.

Surnommé "Die Katze" (le chat) comme un autre gardien de but célèbre mais issu d'un autre sport et surtout d'une autre Allemagne (le footballeur ouest-allemand Sepp Maier), Günter (ou Günther) Katzur se distinguait - fidèle à son surnom - par ses réflexes et sa souplesse.
À 17 ans, en apprentissage dans l'usine d'appareils électroniques Elektro-Apparate-Werke du quartier de Treptow à Berlin-Est (8000 employés), il assista à un match de l'équipe de son entreprise, le BSG Motor Treptow. Il fut si emballé par le spectacle qu'il demanda à rejoindre l'équipe, dont il devint rapidement le gardien de but.
Quand le meilleur club est-allemand, le Dynamo Weißwasser, le recruta, il fut champion trois ans de suite.
Lorsque la RDA perdit le match de qualification olympique contre son homologue de l'Ouest il était parmi les trois joueurs envisagés pour rejoindre une équipe d'Allemagne unifiée mais les autorités ne donnèrent jamais leur accord. Katzur resta frustré de manquer ainsi une participation aux JO.
Il fit défection en 1960 et rejoignit l'Allemagne de l'Ouest où il joua à Miesbach, puis à Mannheim de 1962 à 1968. Il disputa encore un match international pour la RFA en 1964/65.
Il rejoignit ensuite les BFC Preußen. Quand ce club fusionna avec le Berliner SC en 1971 il y avait six gardiens dans l'équipe mais le vétéran Katzur surprit tout le monde en s'emparant du poste de titulaire pour aider les Berlinois à monter en Bundesliga, ce qui lui permit de prendre sa retraite sur ce grand succès.
