Individually skilled player. One of the pioneers of Romanian ice hockey who was part of the first games for Tenis Club Roman Bucureşti, during the 1924/25 season, being only 16-years old.
Born to one of the wealthiest and politically influential families in Romania at the time.
He was never pampered and was reared, educated and trained in a disciplinary manner.
Often helped out in the family wineyard and wine cellars.
He graduated from a school in Fribourg, Switzerland, and from the faculty of law in Bucharest.
Grandfather Ion Brătianu [1821-1891] was the Romanian prime minister between 1876 and 1888.
His father Dinu Brătianu [1866-1950] led the National Liberal Party, was the Romanian finance minister 1933-34 and eventually died in prison as a political prisoner, one of six family members to die in prison.
Dan Brătianu’s uncle Vintilă Brătianu [1867-1930] also was the finance minister (appointed in 1922) and between 1927 and 1928 was the Romanian Prime Minister.
Dan was the director of a telephone company, Societatea de Telefoane din Bucureşti.
In 1944 he was involved in negotiations with foreign high ranking officials, about the future of Romania. One of them was Kim Philby, who later turned out to be Soviet spy.
In 1947 Dan was a general secretary of the Catholic War Relief Services.
He was eventually arrested on March 15, 1948 and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.
Was imprisoned until April 3, 1963 and then spent time in house arrest until July 1964.
Wrote his memoirs in 1984 while in exile.

Né dans l'une des familles les plus riches et influentes politiquement de la Roumanie de l'époque.
Il n'a jamais été un enfant gâté et a été élevé, éduqué et entraîné avec une discipline très rigoureuse.
Il aidait souvent dans les vignes et dans les caves à vin de la famille.
Diplômé de l'école de Fribourg, en Suisse et de la faculté de droit de Bucarest.
Son grand-père Ion Brătianu [1821-1891] fut premier ministre roumain entre 1876 et 1888.
Son père Dinu Brătianu [1866-1950] dirigea le parti libéral national, fut ministre roumain des finances en 1933-34 et est décédé en tant que prisonnier politique, l'un des six membres de la famille à être mort en prison.
L'oncle de Dan Brătianu, Vintilă Brătianu [1867-1930] fut également ministre des finances (désigné en 1922) et entre 1927 et 1928 il fut premier ministre du pays.
Dan dirigea une compagnie de téléphonie, Societatea de Telefoane din Bucureşti.
En 1944 il fut impliqué dans des négociations avec des hauts-dignitaires étrangers, à propos du futur de la Roumanie. Parmi eux Kim Philby, qui plus tard fut accusé d'être un espion soviétique.
En 1947 Dan fut secrétaire général de l'association humanitaire Catholic Relief Services.
Il fut finalement arrêté le 15 mars 1948 et condamné à 15 ans de travaux forcés.
Il fut emprisonné jusqu'au 3 avril 1963 puis séjourna en maison d'arrêt jusqu'en juillet 1964.
Il a écrit ses mémoires en 1984 alors qu'il était en exil.
