Started skating when he was eight years old. Played for Michigan Tech University from 1956 to 1960. He led the team in scoring during his sophomore and senior years, ending his university career with 59 goals and 75 assists and just six penalties in 85 games over four years. He also was team captain.
He got a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked in Green Bay, first in the steel industry before co-owning a coal river transport company.
Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.

Raye la glace dès ses huit ans. Au sein de la Michigan Tech University, il termine deux fois meilleur pointeur de l'équipe et compile 59 buts, 75 assistances et seulement six pénalités en 85 matches étalés sur quatre saisons (de 1956 à 1960). Il est aussi devenu capitaine de l'équipe.
Après avoir obtenu son diplôme de génie mécanique, il travaille à Green Bay dans le Wisconsin, d'abord dans l'industrie sidérurgique avant de devenir copropriétaire d'une entreprise de transport fluvial de charbon. Meilleur marqueur de l'histoire des Green Bay Bobcats, il devient ensuite entraîneur et propriétaire de l'équipe.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey américain.
