Speedy player with a quick wristshot. Compiled an impressive College career in Harvard.
Was originally a center since secondary school, but was moved to left wing at Harvard by legendary coach Bill Cleary. There he formed a dangerous line with Bob McManama and Steve Harris. At the beginning of his sophomore year, another legend, Cooney Weiland, decided to keep Hynes and McManama together and placed Bill Corkery on right wing. This trio was dubbed the "Local Line" because of them being from the area.
MVP of the ECAC Tournament, scoring a hat trick in the finals against Clarkson to give Harvard a come-from-behind 7-4 victory.
Drafted in the NHL 1971 by Boston Bruins and 1972 by New England Whalers (1972).
Asked to play in the 1972 Olympics but declined because he felt he had an obligation to Harvard hockey and he did not want to miss the Pennsylvania and Clarkson games.
In February 1973 he withdrew from Harvard. He had apparently plagiarized a paper for Natural Sciences 118, having copied the paper from the Suffolk Law Review. Under Administrative Board practices, students found guilty of plagiarism were required to withdraw from the University for one full academic year.
Played professional hockey until his retirement in 1978. NHL totals: 22-4-0-4

D’abord centre, il a évolué comme ailier gauche à Harvard sous les ordres de l’entraîneur légendaire Bill Cleary, aux côtés de Bob McManama et Steve Harris. Au début de sa deuxième année, une autre légende, Cooney Weiland, décide de garder Hynes et McManara ensemble et d’y adjoindre Bill Corkery. Ce trio a été surnommé “Local line” car ils étaient de la région. Il fut MVP du tournoi ECAC, marquant un hat-trick en finale contre Clarkson pour donner à Harvard une victoire 7-4 après avoir remonté le score.
Drafté en NHL en 1971 par les Bruins de Boston et en 1972 par les Whalers de New England.
Sélectionné pour les Jeux olympiques 1972, il refuse car il se sent obligé de rester pour Harvard et il ne veut pas manquer les matchs contre Pennsylvania et Clarkson.
En février 1973, il est renvoyé d’Harvard où il a apparemment plagié un article de sciences naturelles, copié du Suffolk Law Review. Le règlement de l’université demande à tout étudiant convaincu de plagiat de s’éloigner de l’université pour une année.
A joué au hockey professionnel jusqu’à sa retraite en 1978.
