Majored in sports management and communications at University of Michigan. Norton became the first Michigan player to be named team's best defenseman as both a freshman and sophomore, and was also first to win the award in each of his three years on the team.
Slick-skating defenseman with good offensive instincts. His fine mobility from the back end and accurate playmaking made him a valuable asset on powerplays. Hard shot from the blue line.
Jeff Norton signed his first NHL-contract right after his participation in the 1988 Olympics and never played in the minors during his career.
Norton played a total of 15 seasons in the NHL. He was traded seven times in a nine-year span, including five years in a row. He battled several injuries, including a bad shoulder that became so loose in its socket that it was coming out during Norton's sleep. His ten-year-younger brother Brad also played in the NHL.
Played one season in Norway and retired in 2003.

Jeff Norton a signé son premier contrat NHL juste après sa participation aux Jeux olympiques 1988 et n'a jamais joué en ligues mineures pendant sa carrière.
Norton a joué 15 saisons dans la LNH. Il a été échangé sept fois en l'espace de neuf ans, dont cinq années consécutives. Il a fait face à plusieurs blessures, dont une épaule devenue si fragile qu'elle se démettait pendant son sommeil. Son frère cadet de dix ans, Brad, a aussi joué en NHL (124 matches).
Jeff a pris sa retraite en 2003 après une dernière saison en Norvège.
