Niskanens paternal great-grandfather hailed from Odessa, Ukraine and his paternal great-grandmother from Russia. From his maternal side, his great-grandparents originated from Finland.
Incredible athlete and superb skater with a lot of offensive upside, but also capable of playing in all game situations.
Defensively inconsistent, running around in his own end a bit. Sometimes lacking ideal hockey sense, hindering his game.
He won the Stanley Cup in 2018 with the Washington Capitals.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the medical protocols taken by the NHL, Niskanen announced his retirement on October 5, 2020.
