Johnny Nilsen

Nilsen, Johnny

Position : D

27-01-1975 Bærum, NOR

Youth team / club formateur : Frisk Asker

Puck-moving defenceman with a good first pass and powerplay abilities.
Though his father had played ice hockey, he got his first skates quite late, at 11. Before that he practiced slalom (skiing) and was good at football.
He couldn't catch the skating level of his teammates but at 13 he "borrowed" many pucks in the ice hall to train his shot on a wall at home all summer.
Only five years after his hockey debut, at 16, he played with Frisk Asker A-team in Elite league.
Norwegian champion 2002 with Frisk Asker. Said he played the last final game with a "black leg" after he got injured in third game and missed the next one. Nilsen was chosen as Norways best defenseman in 2004 and 2006.
Several doctors told him to quit playing hockey so he announced his retirement in April 2009 due to a bad left shoulder.
He still wanted to come back though, until he fell from his garage in July 2010. His knee was completely destroyed and he had to spend six months in hospital.
Played 643 games with Frisk Asker, a club record later broken by Petter Kristiansen. Spent his whole career in Asker, except two years in Lillehammer.
Scored 450 points (118+322) for Frisk Asker. His number 56 has been retired by the club.
After his retirement Nilsen did home study to work as a muscle therapist.
He still helped his club, and fans could see him hold a sausage stand before hockey games.
