His father Jaroslav was an ice hockey forward and his two-year-older brother Jaroslav jr a defenceman, both at Czechoslovak/Czech Extraliga level.
Highly skilled player who defected from Czechoslovakia at 17 when his Litvínov junior team played in a tournament in Calgary.
Second overall pick in the 1990 NHL draft. Great size, perfect for the NHL. Adept at playing both as a center and left wing.
World class skills and fine hockey sense. Strong playmaker and fine skater in his younger days.
Developed into a solid player defensively later on. His attitude towards the game improved greatly as he got older.
Player of the year in Czech Extraliga in 2012.
In 2014 he appeared in the Winter Olympic Games for the first time since 1994 with Canada, a span of 20 years. It was the longest span between Olympic appearances by an ice hockey player.
He announced his retirement on March 13, 2014. Named general manager of Czech national team in 2018.

Son père Jaroslav a joué en attaque et son frère aîné de deux ans Jaroslav junior en défense, tous deux au niveau de l'Extraliga tchécoslovaque/tchèque.
Ce grand talent a fait défection de Tchécoslovaquie à 17 ans pendant que son équipe junior de Litvínov participait à un tournoi à Calgary.
Numéro 2 de la draft 1989, il avait un gabarit parfait pour la NHL (191 cm, 92 kg) et pouvait jouer au centre comme à l'aile gauche.
Une technique de classe mondiale et un bon sens du jeu. Grand créateur de jeune qui patinait bien dans ses jeunes années.
Son attitude envers le jeu s'est grandement améliorée en fin de carrière et il est devenu un joueur défensivement solide.
Joueur de l'année en Extraliga tchèque en 2012.
En 2014 il est apparu aux JO d'hiver pour la première fois depuis 1994 (où il avait obtenu la médaille d'argent avec le Canada). Cet intervalle de 20 années entre deux participations est le plus long de l'histoire olympique pour un hockeyeur.
Il a annoncé a retraite le 13 mars 2014 et a été nommé directeur général de l'équipe nationale tchèque en 2018.
717 points (310+407) en 982 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
