After the 1938 Munich Agreement, his native town of Děhylov was incorporated into Nazi Germany and his family had to move to neighbouring city Ostrava.
Began playing hockey on frozen ponds in Mariánské Hory (part of Ostrava) and joined local club Ostravská Slavia at the age of 12.
In 1950 he went to play for SK Vítkovice and worked in the ironworks.
Player/coach Vladimír Bouzek called him to his line (along with Miloslav Blažek on the other wing) instead of Vlastimil Bubnik who moved to defence.
Last living member of Vítkovice first championship team (1952). Won five other Czechoslovak titles with Brno (1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960).
In Brno he played mostly on a line with František Vaněk and Bohumil Prošek, including at the 1956 Olympic Games.
His career highlight was to play in the Olympics with his great idol Vladimír Zábrodský. His most feared opponent was Stanislav Sventek.
Represented Czechoslovakia 12 times, scoring six goals. Scored 116 goals and almost 200 points in 300 league games. Retired in 1966.
Coached Vítkovice team to Czech junior championship 1973 (behind Slovak team Poprad) and Czechoslovak Under-17 championship 1980. Preferred skilled players as a coach.

Après les accords de Munich de 1938, sa ville natale Děhylov a été incorporée avec les Sudètes à l'Allemagne nazie et sa famille a dû s'installer dans la ville voisine d'Ostrava.
Il a commencé le hockey sur les lacs gelés de Mariánské Hory (quartier d'Ostrava) et a rejoint le club local Ostravská Slavia à 12 ans.
En 1950, à 19 ans, il est parti jouer au SK Vítkovice tout en travaillant dans les usines sidérurgiques.
L'entraîneur-joueur Vladimír Bouzek l'a alors pris sur sa ligne (avec Miloslav Blažek ur l'autre aile) à la place de Vlastimil Bubnik qu'il a replacé en défense.
Dernier membre encore en vie de la première équipe championne de Vítkovice (1952). Il a remporté cinq autres titres de champion de Tchécoslovaquie avec Brno (1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960).
Il a principalement joué sur une ligne avec František Vaněk et Bohumil Prošek, tant à Brno qu'aux Jeux olympiques 1956.
Ces JO joués dans la même équipe que sa grande idole Vladimír Zábrodský constituent son meilleur souvenir. L'adversaire qu'il redoutait le plus était Stanislav Sventek.
12 sélections avec Tchécoslovaquie, 6 buts. Auteur de 116 buts et près de 200 points en 300 matches de chaampionnat. Retraité en 1966.
Comme entraîneur, il préférait les joueurs techniques. Il a conduit Vítkovice aux titres de champion tchèque junior 1973 (derrière l'équipe slovaque Poprad) et de champion tchécoslovaque des moins de 17 ans 1980.
