Both his parents were born in Canada, in St.John’s, Newfoundland, where he grew up.
His father Robert was a shoemaker.
Jack Murphy served in the 1st Battalion, Newfoundland Regiment during WW I.
On October 31, 1915 he was shot in the left shoulder while in combat at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli. The bullet was removed after an operation under local anaesthetic.
Then on October 10, 1917 at 1st Canadian General Hospital in Étaples, France, and old fishing town and port, he was treated for severe gunshot wounds to his left ankle.
He eventually settled down in England in the early 1920s and went on to live there.
Murphy worked for Kingsford, Dorman & Co Solicitors in London.

Ses parents sont nés du Canada, à Saint-Jean de Terre-Neuve, où il a grandi. Son père Robert était fabricant de chaussures.
Jack Murphy a servi dans le 1er bataillon du régiment de Terre-Neuve pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.
Le 31 octobre 1915 il fut touché à l'épaule gauche au combat dans la baie de Suvla lors de l'opération de Gallipoli. La balle fut retirée après une opération sous anesthésie locale.
Puis le 10 octobre 1917 il fut soigné de graves blessures par balles à la cheville gauche dans l'hôpital canadien d'Étaples, port de pêche du Pas-de-Calais.
Il s'est établi en Angleterre au début des années 1920 et y vécut le reste de sa vie.
Murphy a travaillé dans le cabinet d'avocats Kingsford, Dorman & Co à Londres.
