He played for several Bucharest clubs. First emerged playing for Sportul in 1931/1932 and then Politia (1932/1933), Telefon Club (1934-37), TC Câmpina (1935), Venus (1937-38), Gloria (1938-40), Juventus (1940-42) and Textila Buhusi (1947).
Functioned as a hockey referee in the early 1940s.
Munteanu was also a very good football player, and played for several teams, including Fotbal Club Sportul Studenţesc București, Unirea Tricolor Bucureşti, Juventus Bucureşti, Clubul Sportiv Muncitoresc Reșița, Foresta Suceava, Fotbal Club Politehnica Timișoara, Fotbal Club Municipal Bacău.
Then after WW II he was the football manager, coach and goalie for Textila Buhusi, a city in Bacău County, in the northeastern parts of Romania.
His son Ion Munteanu II [1955-2006] represented Romania 23 times in football.

Il a joué dans plusieurs clubs de Bucarest. Il apparaît au Sportul en 1931/1932 puis a joué pour le Politia (1932/1933), le Telefon Club (1934-37), le TC Câmpina (1935), Venus (1937-38), le Gloria (1938-40), la Juventus (1940-42) et le Textila Buhusi (1947).
Il a officié comme arbitre de hockey sur glace au début des années 1940.
Munteanu fut également un très bon footballeur qui a connu de nombreuses équipes, comme le Fotbal Club Sportul Studenţesc București, l'Unirea Tricolor Bucureşti, la Juventus Bucureşti, le Clubul Sportiv Muncitoresc Reșița, la Foresta Suceava, le Fotbal Club Politehnica Timișoara ou le Fotbal Club Municipal Bacău.
Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il fut manager, entraîneur et gardien du Textila Buhusi, club d'une ville de la région de Bacău, au nord-est de la Roumanie.
Son fils Ion Munteanu II [1955-2006] a été sélectionné 23 fois avec l'équipe roumaine de football.
