Began playing hockey at the age of five.
Voted as the best goaltender at the U-18 World Junior Championships 1998 and at the 2006 Division 1 (Pool B) World Championships.
Three-time German league champion. Drafted in the NHL by Washington Capitals 2001.
Diagnosed with brain cancer in November 2006 and passed away less than three years later.
His number 80 jersey was retired by Kölner Haie after his death.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Il a commencé le hockey à l'âge de cinq ans.
Désigné meilleur gardien des championnat U-18 de poule B en 1998 et des Mondiaux de Division 1 en 2006.
Trois fois champion d'Allemagne. Drafté en NHL par les Capitals de Washington en 2001.
On lui a diagnostiqué un cancer du cerveau en novembre 2006 et il est décédé moins de trois ans plus tard.
Son numéro 80 fut retiré par les Kölner Haie après sa mort.
Intronisé au temple de la renommée du hockey allemand.
