Montemurro, Carlo Alberto

Position : D

18-01-1934 Rouyn-Noranda, QC, CAN

Youth team / club formateur : Oshawa

Montemurro was born and grew up in Rouyn, QC, Canada, where his father owned several grocery stores.
His father Giuseppe "Jos" Montemurro [1895-1989] was born in Sicily, Italy and immigrated to North America in 1911 at the age of 16 and eventually settled down in Noranda (now Rouyn-Noranda) following the mining boom.
Carlo Montemurro’s mother was Mattawa, ON native Erminia Boniferro [1904-1969]. He had five brothers, two who died as infants.
He played high school and intermediate hockey (for Oshawa) before moving to his fathers homeland of Italy at the age of 20.
Retired between 1957-60 before making a comeback in Rouyn (Northern Intermediate Hockey League) 1960-61.
Fast, hefty and smart. Excellent penalty killer. Could also play forward. Coached briefly.
In 1962 he owned "Montemurros Discount Store" in Val D’Or and ignored the closing hours by law and was fined. He claimed the law was discriminatory and refused to pay the fine.
Then owned "Butchy Boy Bakery" in Val D’Or that was destroyed by a fire on November 10, 1964. He sued a policeman and two members of the Fire Commission for injust treatment in connection with the fire, as well as moral and financial damages. The Police arrested Montemurro suspecting that he had set fire on his own shop. He was jailed for two days before being released.
Later controlled three investment firms, C and M Financial Consultants Ltd., Remor Investment Management and Astra Trust Co. Two of them collapsed in the spring of 1980.
In January 1984 he was sentenced to six years in prison on six fraud charges that left about 350 investors, many elderly in the Kitchener, Hamilton and Niagara regions, about $ 6 million out of pocket.
Later moved to Orlando, FL.
His birthplace is sometimes incorrectly given as Milan, italy.
