Voted as the best goaltender at the 1987 Pool C World Junior Championships.
One of few players who have participated in all four World Championship levels (D to A).
Retired at 29 because he already had three operations on his knees.
Attended Scottish Police Training College and became policeman.
Did a lot of local charity work to raise money, organizing hockey games.
In August 2017 he allegedly touched the private parts of a woman at a local music bar in Edinburgh. It was also said that he repeatedly exposed his privates to a male member of staff and uttered threats towards the man during. McKay then allegedly behaved in a threatening or abusive manner while in a police vehicle, threatening to urinate within the vehicle. McKay was also charged with repeatedly shouting and swearing and attempting to open the doors of the police vehicle he was travelling in and failing to comply with instructions from the arresting officers. In the end he was fined £ 540 for the incident.

Il fit beaucoup dans le caritatif à échelle locale, organisant notamment des matchs de hockey.
En août 2017 il fut accusé d'attouchement sur une femme dans un bar musical d'Edimbourg. Il lui est également reproché des faits d'exhibitionnisme devant un membre masculin du staff contre qui il a également proféré des menaces. McKay se serait alors comporté de manière menaçante et abusive dans la voiture de police, menaçant d'uriner à l'intérieur du véhicule. Il a également été inculpé pour avoir insulté à plusieurs reprises et tenté d'ouvrir les portières du véhicule de police, ainsi que pour ne pas avoir respecté les instructions des agents lors de l'arrestation. Pour cet incident, il fut condamné à une amende de 540 livres.
