Born in Nebraska but raised in British Columbia. Started playing hockey at age 4 in Vanderhoof, B.C.
Began playing travel hockey as a squirt in Victoria, where his family had moved in order to get more ice time for his sister, who was an aspiring figure skater.
Drafted in the NHL by Minnesota North Stars in 1990. McGowan never got to play in the NHL but spent five seasons in the IHL and AHL before moving to Germany where he played for two seasons.
He finished off his playing career in WPHL and ECHL, retiring in 1999.
Scored 720 (288+432) career points in 864 games.
Became a hockey coach, instructor and responsible for the development of players.
Also served as a managing director of a hockey school.

Né dans le Nebraska, il a grandi en Colombie Britannique où il a commencé le hockey à jouer à 4 ans à Vanderhoof.
Il a pratiqué le hockey au gré de ses voyages à Victoria, où sa famille est partie afin d'obtenir plus de temps de glace pour sa soeur, qui était un espoir du patinage artistique.
Drafté en NHL par les North Stars du Minnesota en 1990, il n'y a jamais joué mais a passé cinq saisons entre IHL et AHL avant de partir en Allemagne pour deux saisons.
Il a terminé sa carrière de joueur en WPHL et ECHL, prenant sa retraite en 1999.
Auteur de 720 (288+432) points en 864 parties dans sa carrière.
Il est devenu entraîneur, instructeur et responsable de développement des joueurs.
Il fut également manager d'une école de hockey.
