Both his parents and grandparents were born in Canada.
His father Francis [1873-1940] was born in Montreal and his mother Mary [1873-1960] in Halifax.
He played for Melrose High School in the late 1920s together with Elbridge Ross (1936 Olympics) and Ed Keating (1934 WC).
He was educated at Harvard where he also played in the early 1930s.
His spelling was often "McDonnell", but his birth register had "McDonell".
His middle name was surely given to him as a tribute to Harvard University, because not only did Fred McDonell go there, so did several generations before him.
He passed away at Geisinger Holy Spirit hospital in Camp Hill, a suburb of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Il joua pour l'équipe du lycée Melrose à la fin des années 1920 avec Elbridge Ross (qui fit les Jeux de 1936) et Ed Keating (Mondiaux 1934).
Il fit ses études à Harvard où il joua également au début des années 1930.
Il apparaît souvent sous l'orthographe "McDonnell", mais l'orthographe de naissance est bien "McDonell".
Son deuxième prénom fut certainement donné en référence à l'Université d'Harvard que plusieurs générations avant lui ont fréquenté.
Décédé à l'hôpital Geisinger Holy Spirit de Camp Hill, dans la banlieue d'Harrisburg, en Pennsylvanie.
