Born to Joseph Kenneth McCoy and Lucille Elmina Fortier.
Accomplished shot blocker and reliable defensively. Tough but also skilled. Good passer.
He grew up playing hockey on the local ponds and playgrounds of South Minneapolis.
McCoy was actually a basketball player at first and did not play organized hockey until 1953 as an 11-year-old sixth grader.
He became a full-time hockey player in 9th grade, while a freshman at DeLaSalle.
McCoy also played on a local senior amateur team called the Royal 58 Beer, which won both the Minnesota State and National Amateur Championships.
After playing one year at St. John’s University, he transferred to the University of Minnesota as a walk-on.
In the fall of 1963, he attended open tryouts for the 1964 USA Men’s Olympic Team at Wakota arena in South St. Paul. He made the team.
After the Olympics McCoy played in the USHL with the Minnesota Nationals, a farm team for the USA National team, the Duluth Port Stars (USHL), and then the Rochester Mustangs when the Duluth team folded.
He went on to play many years of senior amateur hockey throughout the United States and Canada, first for Steven’s Buick, then with Marv Jorde’s Parkers Hockey Club where he won eight Minnesota State and six National Senior Men’s Championships.
He went on yo work as a high school teacher, during which he coached high school hockey teams including that of Richfield High School.
In 2017 he was awarded the Marv Jorde Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the Minnesota hockey community.

Rassurant défensivement et excellent pour bloquer les lancers. Rugueux mais aussi technique. Bon passeur.
Il fit ses premiers pas dans le hockey sur les étangs locaux et les aires de jeu du sud de Minneapolis.
McCoy a en fait débuté par le basketball et n'a pas pratiqué le hockey organisé avant 1953 et l'âge de 11 ans.
Il se consacra pleinement au hockey uniquement que trois ans plus tard à sa en première année à DeLaSalle.
McCoy jouait également dans l'équipe locale Royal 58 Beer, qui remporta le championnat du Minnesota et le championnat national amateur.
Après avoir joué un an à l'université de St. John’s, il fut transféré à l'Université du Minnesota.
Fin 1963, il prit part à des essais libres pour constituer la sélection américaine en vue des Jeux olympiques 1964 à la patinoire Wakota de South St. Paul. Il gagna sa place.
Après les Jeux, McCoy joua en USHL avec les Nationals de Minnesota, une équipe-affiliée à la sélection américaine, puis pour les Duluth Port Stars (USHL), et les Mustangs de Rochester Mustangs quand l'équipe de Duluth s'arrêta.
Il joua de longues années dans le circuit senior amateur à travers les États-Unis et le Canada, tout d'abord pour le Buick de Steven, puis le Parkers Hockey Club de Marv Jorde avec qui il remporta huit titres de champion du Minnesota et six championnats séniors nationaux.
Il fut ensuite professeur en lycée, mais également entraîneur des équipes de hockey notamment au lycée Richfield.
En 2017 il fut récompensé du trophée Marv Jorde Memorial Lifetime Achievement pour son implication dans la communauté hockey du Minnesota.
