Raised in St Paul, MN, where he attended Nativity Elementary and Cretin High.
Upon graduation in from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and was selected for the V-12 Officer Training Program at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
While at the University of Minnesota he excelled in athletics and was selected as the goalie for the 1947 USA World Championship team.
On February 20, 1946 he received his Commission as an Ensign in the USN.
His initial assignments included sea duty throughout the Far East, including duty in pre-communist Shanghai, China.
During the Korean War he was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry during the Inchon Landings, leading damage control parties aboard the USS Collett, after the ship sustained heavy damage from enemy shore batteries.
After the war he continued to serve in various warship the U.S. Pacific Fleet and at several shore stations.
In 1960 he graduated from the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, and thereafter served as Executive Officer in USS CUSHING and USS TUNER JOY. He assumed command of USS SAMMUEL N. MOORE in 1962. Subsequent duties included duty in Washington on the Navy Staff, sequential command of Escort Squadron 3, Destroyer Squadron 33, and Destroyer Squadron 33. He also was assigned as Chief of Staff of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla 7 and then as Commanding Officer of USS DALE (DLG-19). In 1971 he assumed command of USS FOX (DLG-33).
In addition to various service medals, he holds the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Combat V, Nave Unit Commendation, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and Vietnam Navy Medal Second Class.
At the time of his retirement as a Captain he was Commanding Officer of the Navel Destroyer School in Newport.
Upon retiring from the service, he moved to San Diego, California where he obtained an MBA at the University of San Diego.
In 1982 he moved to Apple Valley, Minnesota, where he worked for Sperry Univac as Naval Systems Engineer.
Upon retirement from his second career in 1992 he moved to Redmond, Washington.

Il a grandi St Paul (Minnesota) où il fréquenta l'école élémentaire Nativity puis le lycée Cretin.
Après son diplôme d'études secondaires, il a rejoint l'US Navy et fut sélectionné pour le programme d'entraînement du V-12 Officer à l'Université du Minnesota, où il obtint un diplôme en ingéniérie mécanique.
Quand il était à l'Université du Minnesota, il excellait en athlétisme et fut sélectionné comme gardien pour la sélection américaine à l'occasion des Mondiaux de 1947.
Le 20 février 1946 il a reçu ses insignes de l'US Navy.
Ses missions initiales l'ont envoyé en Extrême-Orient, notamment à Shanghai en Chine pré-communiste.
Pendant la guerre de Corée il fut récompensé de l'Etoile de Bronze pour bravoure lors du débarquement d'Inchon, grâce aux manoeuvres sur l'USS Collett après que le navire ait subi de lourds dommages causés par l'ennemi.
Après-guerre il continua de servir sur divers navires de guerre de la flotte américaine du Pacifique et sur des bases militaires.
En 1960 il fut diplômé de l'Université militaire navale des États-Unis à Newport (Rhode Island) et servit ensuite comme officier exécutif sur l'USS CUSHING et l'USS TUNER JOY. Il prit les commandes de l'USS SAMMUEL N. MOORE en 1962. Au moment de sa retraite de Capitaine, il était Commandant-Officier de la Navel Destroyer School à Newport.
Quand il fut retiré du service, il alla à San Diego (Californie) où il obtint un MBA de l'Université de San Diego.
En 1982 il partit à Apple Valley, Minnesota, où il travailla pour Sperry Univac comme ingénieur en systèmes navals.
Après la retraite de sa seconde carrière en 1992, il s'installa à Redmond, Washington.
