He was mostly known for his effortless skating, a trait that many Arosa players had.
His skating speed earned him the nickname "Pfeil von Arosa" (The Arrow of Arosa).
In Arosa he formed a deadly line together with the Lindemann brothers.
Captained Arosa to its first league title in 23 years 1980, and repeated the feat in 1982.
He also captained the Swiss National Team. In total he represented Switzerland 83 times, scoring 26 goals.
All-Star and best left winger at the 1978 World Pool B Championships.
At the 1981 World Pool B Championships he scored all four goals for Switzerland in a 4-3 win against Japan, with the winner 46 seconds before the end.
Timely and important goals was a kind of trademark for Mattli.
He retired in 1987 after having scored 200 goals in 366 NLA games.
Worked as a carpenter and then was a landowner/farmer.
Died of a heart attack at the age of 36.
Uncle of 1998 snowboard (Men's halfpipe) olympic gold medalist Gian Simmen.

Principalement connu pour son patinage naturel et sans effort, un trait commun à de nombreux joueurs d'Arosa.
Sa vitesse de patinage lui valait le surnom de "Pfeil von Arosa" (La flèche d'Arosa). Il y formait une ligne redoutable avec les frères Lindemann.
Capitaine d'Arosa à l'occasion du premier titre de l'équipe en 23 ans en 1980, performance répétée en 1982.
Également capitaine en équipe nationale. Il comptait 83 sélections avec la Suisse, et a marqué 26 buts.
Meilleur ailier gauche des Mondiaux B de 1978.
Lors des Mondiaux B de 1981, il a inscrit les quatre buts de la Suisse dans la victoire 4-3 contre le Japon, avec le but vainqueur à 46 secondes du terme.
Les buts vainqueurs et cruciaux étaient la marque de fabrique de Mattli.
Il prit sa retraite en 1987 après avoir atteint les 200 buts en 366 matchs de NLA.
Il travaillait comme charpentier, puis devint propriétaire-fermier.
Mort d'une crise cardiaque à l'âge de 36 ans seulement.
Oncle du médaillé d'or olympique 1998 en snowboard (halfpipe masculin) Gian Simmen.
