Born in Ondřejovice (Endersdorf in German) just like both of his parents.
In 1913 the family moved to Opava, 66 km from his native town.
Had excellent technical skills but was a slow skater.
In the early 1930s he was briefly tutored in hockey by Gordon MacKenzie, a Canadian who had won the World Championship title with Canada (Manitoba) 1931.
In the mid 1930s, Mattern worked at the Troppauer Zucker Raffinerie, the local sugar manufacturer.
His first name is often wrongfully given as Hans or Jan Mattern.

Au milieu des années 1930, Mattern a travaillé à la Troppauer Zucker Raffinerie, l'entreprise sucrière locale.
