John Matchefts

Matchefts, John Peter ("The Fly")

Position : LW/C

18-06-1931 Eveleth, MN, USA
10-11-2013 Colorado Springs, CO, USA

His paternal grandparents were from Poland, and from his maternal side they hailed from Italy.
Grew in Eveleth, Minnesota, there he first learned how to skate by borrowing his big sister's figure skates.
In 1948 at the age of 16, he emerged as a high school star for the Eveleth Golden Bears. The lightning quick forward was even invited to play for the 1948 U.S. Olympic team at that tender age. However, high school rules prevented him from playing that year.
Matchefts was like a jackrabbit on the ice, and could really maneuver well. He was known for his good end-to-end speed, but it was his quickness that stood out. He may not have been particularly big, but his hands moved as fast as his feet.
At Michigan, he was a center for three years and was elected captain of the 1953 team. Was an All-American in 1951 and 1953 when he played on the championship teams. He was also the Most Valuable Player in the 1953 NCAA Tournament.
Formed a line with Bill Cleary and John Mayasich at the 1956 Winter Olympics.
Was also a good football and baseball player.
Eventually turned down offers to play professional hockey. Went on to coach in ice hockey.
Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.
