Mason had a stellar college career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, culminating in a 1982-83 season in which he was named WCHA Player of the Year.
He was a member of the US squad at the 1984 Winter Olympics and 1987 Canada Cup.
He was never drafted in the NHL and signed as a free agent.
Mason was considered a reliable backup goaltender in the NHL, but wasn’t a No.1 goalie.
Played in the NHL-marathon playoff game in 1987 when Washington lost to NY Islanders after 4 overtimes.
Mason drank 10 bottles of water during the game and made 54 saves (36 in OT).
Retired in 1995. Became a goaltending consultant and coach in the NHL (Atlanta & Minnesota).
