First skated at the age of five in Avon Old Farms in Connecticut where he grew up.
Also grew up in Boston, MA. Grew up admiring Ray Bourque and Brian Leetch.
His older brother Rob Mara was drafted in the NHL by Chicago Blackhawks.
Paul Mara was highly touted as a junior for his size and skills.
Good size and a good skater for a big man. Effective on either side of the ice. Had good reach
He was solid at clearing the front of the net. Very good at anticipating plays. Excellent stamina.
Not very polished in the defensive zone and prone to making bad decisions from time to time. Tendency at times to take bad penalties.
Considered Mark Messier to be the toughest competitor that he played against.
Retired in 2013. Went on to coach in womens hockey.

Un bon patineur pour son grand gabarit. Efficace partout sur la glace. Il avait une bonne portée.
Solide pour faire le ménage devant la cage. Très bon dans le jeu d'anticipation. Excellente endurance.
Pas toujours très fiable en zone défensive, sujet à quelques mauvaises décisions et parfois à de mauvaises pénalités.
Il considérait Mark Messier comme le plus difficile de tous ses adversaires.
Retraité en 2013. Il devint entraîneur de hockey chez les féminines.
253 points (64+189) en 734 parties de saison régulière dans la NHL.
