Superbly versatile athlete. He ran 100 m in less than 11 sec, was a Czech 110 m hurdle record holder at 16.
He played League football at 17. Was a field hockey and tennis representative (Davis Cup).
Good cyclist who beat many elite cyclists of the time when he raced. He was also a scratch golfer.
First played hockey at the age of five. His father Karel and uncle Ota co-founded the legendary club AC Sparta Praha.
He had superb hockey sense and an uncanny ability to slip through defenders. Accurate shot from the left side.
He was an offensive catalyst with swift and smooth skating. Masterful at dictating the tempo of a game.
Hockey’s first documented 1000 goal scorer, 2000 goals in nearly 850 games.
Spoke fluent Czech, English and German, also adequate in French and Italian.
In 1948 he emigrated from Czechoslovakia and eventually settled down in New York where he worked for Radio Free Europe and gave the New York upper class tennis lessons for many years.
Inducted into the Czech and IIHF Hall of Fame.

Athlète complet. Il courait le 100 m en moins de 11 secondes, a établi le record tchécoslovaque au 110 mètres haies à 16 ans.
Il joua en championnat tchécoslovaque de football à 17 ans. International en hockey sur gazon et tennis (il participa à la coupe Davis).
Excellent cycliste qui a battu plusieurs professionnels de la discipline lors de ses courses. Il fut également un golfeur reconnu.
Il commença le hockey à 5 ans. Son père Karel et son oncle Ota co-fondèrent le légendaire club du Sparta Prague.
Superbe sens du hockey et facilité déconcertante à passer entre les défenseurs. Lancer précis de la gauche.
Catalyseur offensif avec son patineur fin et efficace. Grandiose pour dicter le tempo d'unerencontre.
Il est le premier joueur de l'histoire (sur décompte officiel) à avoir marqué 1000 buts, il a atteint les 2000 buts en près de 850 matchs.
Il parlait couramment tchèque, anglais et allemand, avec de bonnes notions de français et d'italien.
En 1948 il quitta la Tchecoslovaquie pour New York où il travailla pour Radio Free Europe et donna des cours de tennis aux New Yorkais aisés durant des années.
Intronisé au Hall of Fame du hockey tchèque et de l'IIHF.
