Noted as a small (hence his nickname Shorty) but very speedy defenseman.
He was born in a family with eight children (he had three sisters and four brothers).
Had German roots. Learned his hockey in midget, juvenile and junior ranks with the Lethbridge Native Son organization.
Considered to be the hardest hitter on the 1951 World Championship team.
After the 1951 World Championships he stayed in England and finished the season with Harringay Racers.
Late in 1951 he went on to play in Germany for Berliner SC and coached there.
Malacko returned back to Canada in 1953 and got married.
He continued to play for the Nelson Maple Leafs between 1954 and 1966, helping the team reach the Allan Cup finals in 1965.
Became a hockey coach and manager. He also became an avid hunter and fisherman.
Malacko was an avid hockey fan all his life and never missed Hockey Night in Canada on TV.
Malacko worked over 30 years with the City of Nelson, before taking an early retirement in 1989.
He passed away at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, BC.

Défenseur de petite taille (d'où son surnom Shorty) mais très rapide.
D'origine allemande, né dans une famille de huit enfants (il avait trois soeurs et quatre frères).
Il a appris le hockey en midget, équipe de jeune et junior dans l'organisation de Lethbridge Native Son.
Considéré comme le joueur infligeant les mises en échec les plus dures lors des Mondiaux de 1951.
Après le tournoi, il a fini la saison en Angleterre aux Racers d'Harringay. Fin 1951, il est devenu entraîneur-joueur du Berliner SC.
Malacko est retourné au Canada en 1953 et s'y est marié.
Il joua pour les Maple Leafs de Nelson entre 1954 et 1966, aidant l'équipe à atteindre la finale de la Coupe Allan en 1965.
Il devint entraîneur de hockey et manager. Il aimait également la chasse et la pêche.
Malacko fut toute sa vie un fan avide de hockey, il ne loupait jamais Hockey Night in Canada à la télévision.
Malacko travailla pendant 30 ans pour la municipalité de Nelson, jusqu'à sa retraite en 1989.
Décédé à l'hôpital du Lac Kootenay à Nelson, en Colombie Britannique.
