Mieczysław Makutynowicz

Makutynowicz-Sienkiewicz, Henryk

Position : G

14-01-1922 Vilnius, POL (LTU)
28-08-1990 Greensboro, NC, USA

He was born in Vilnius, today the capital of Lithuania. Back then, in 1920, the city had been seized by the Polish army.
The city and its surroundings were designated as a separate state, called the Republic of Central Lithuania.
So for eighteen months the entity served as a buffer state between Poland, upon which it depended, and Lithuania, which claimed the area.
On February 20, 1922, one month after Makutynowicz was born, the entire area was annexed by Poland, with the city becoming the capital of the Wilno Voivodship (Wilno being the name of Vilnius in Polish).
The predominant language of the city at the time was Polish.
Makutynowicz eventually moved to Łódź where he played for the local team ŁKS.
He was regarded as one of the three best goaltenders in Poland right after the war.
On February 10, 1948, just two days after the Olympic games, he left from Bremen, Germany, and sailed for New York.
In the USA he worked as a vice president for Beard Hardwoods Inc. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
He was known simply as "Henry Sienkiewicz" in the USA.
Buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro, NC.
