Born in Leipzig but grew up in Frankfurt before moving to Bad Nauheim when he was 11.
Was known as the "Man with the Black Mask". Catched with his right glove.
He began his playing career in Bad Nauheim 1957 and played there until 1970.
In Bad Nauheim he was mentored by Larry Palmer, the Olympic gold medallist from 1960.
Betweeen 1970 and 1977 he played for Düsseldorfer EG.
After that he played for EC Deilinghofen, Kölner EC and SB Rosenheim, retiring in 1981.
He represented West Germany a total of 53 times.
His daughter is Heike Makatsch (b.1971), actress who have appeared in several Hollywood movies like Love Actually, Resident Evil and The Book Thief.

Né à Leipzig, il a grandi à Francfort avant de partir à Bad Nauheim quand il avait 11 ans.
Connu comme "L'homme au masque noir". Il portait la mitaine à la main droite.
Il commença sa carrière à Bad Nauheim en 1957 et y joua jusqu'en 1970.
Là bas il eur comme tuteur Larry Palmer, médaille d'or olympique en 1960.
Entre 1970 et 1977 il joua à Düsseldorf, puis porta les couleurs de Deilinghofen, Cologne et Rosenheim, jusqu'à sa retraite en 1981.
53 sélections avec l'Allemagne de l'Ouest.
Sa fille Heike Makatsch (née en 1971) est actrice et a joué dans plusieurs films Hollywoodiens dont Love Actually, Resident Evil ou The Book Thief.
