John Magwood played hockey at the University of Toronto between 1912 and 1915.
He was 173 cm (5’8”) and weighed 63 kg (140 lbs).
He was a member of the Royal Aero Club of United Kingdom in the 1920s.
Between 1923 and 1925 he got several patents for an apparatus for playing race games. They were of the type in which racing-members were caused to move along a course, means being provided to interrupt their progress, and comprised mounting each racing-member on a rotatable screw-threaded spindle in such a manner that the rotation of the spindle caused the racing-member when unobstructed to advance, the spindles being rotated collectively and simultaneously.
In ice hockey he captained Great Britain in 1931 and was one the best players of the tournament.
Vice President of the British Ice Hockey Association in 1934. Also an international hockey referee.
Noted as a smart player with fine leadership qualities.
In May of 1934 Magwood was sentenced to three months hard labour for driving a car in a dangerous manner, driving in the wrong direction, driving without reasonable consideration for others, failing to stop after an accident and for failing to report an accident.
A taxi driver testified that Magwood had hit another motorist, which Magwood claimed was a complete fabrication. The Magistrate said that although Magwood was sober at the time, his conduct certainly was that of a drunken man. Magwood appealed the sentence and only had to pay a £ 20 fine plus £ 21 in costs.
Also a good golfer. Died after an illness at the Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood.

John Magwood jouait au hockey au sein de l'Université de Toronto entre 1912 et 1915. Il mesurait 1m73 et pesait 63kg.
Membre du Royal Aero Club du Royaume Uni dans les années 1920.
Entre 1923 et 1925 il obtint plusieurs brevets de jeux de course : les éléments étaient montés sur des broches filetées rotatives qui leur permettaient de se déplacer sur un parcours semé d'obstacles.
En hockey sur glace il fut le capitaine de la Grande-Bretagne en 1931 et l'un des meilleurs joueurs du tournoi.
Vice-président de la British Ice Hockey Association en 1934. Il était également arbitre international.
Considéré comme un joueur intelligent avec de bonnes qualités de meneur d'hommes.
En mai 1934 Magwood fut condamné à trois mois de travaux forcés pour conduite dangereuse (à contre sens, sans tenir compte des autres et avec délit de fuite).
Un chauffeur de taxi a témoigné que Magwood a eu une collision, ce qu'il clamait être un mensonge. Le juge a déclaré que, même si Magwood était bien sobre sur le moment, sa conduite fut digne de celle d'un homme ivre. Magwood a fait appel et n'a finalement dû payer qu'une amende de 20 livres plus 21 livres pour les frais.
Également très bon golfeur. Il est décédé des suites d'une maladie à l'Hôpital de Mount Vernon, à Northwood.
