Born in Lambert, Stirlingshire, Scotland but moved with his family to Montreal, Canada at the age of five.
Learned to play ice hockey in Montreal. Played three seasons in England from 1935 to 1937 before going back to Canada.
Was active throughout the 1940s, playing for teams like Toburn, Kirkland Lake and Niagara Falls.
Tough and uncompromising defenseman who never backed down from a good scrap or a thunderous hit or two.
He almost made the 1936 British Olympic team, but in the end his rough play lost him that spot.
In 1937 he represented Great Britain at the World Championships.
He played three games in the tournament and scored two goals and one assist, all points coming in the game against Romania.
Some sources have him born in Carronshore, Falkirk. Also, January 8, 1915 is another birthdate given for him.
His gravestone has the above birthdate and spelling.
His last name was spelled both as "McPhail" and "MacPhail" in the newspapers.

Né à Lambert, dans le Stirlingshire, en Écosse, il émigra à Montréal avec sa famille à l'âge de cinq ans.
Il y apprit à jouer au hockey, mais joua trois années en Angleterre de 1935 à 1937 avant de repartir au Canada.
Il continua à jouer durant toutes les années 1940, dans des équipes comme Toburn, Kirkland Lake et Niagara Falls.
Défenseur rugueux et sans concession qui ne reculait jamais devant les grosses charges.
Il fut proche de participer aux Jeux Olympuques 1936 avec la sélection britannique, mais son jeu jugé trop dur lui fit perdre sa place.
Il prit part en revanche aux Mondiaux de 1937 et marqua deux buts et une assistance, tous inscrits face à la Roumanie.
Certaines sources le faisaient naître à Carronshore, Falkirk. De même, il a parfois été indiqué qu'il serait né le 8 janvier 1915.
Sa pierre tombale indique en tout cas les informations figurant sur la présente fiche.
Son nom de famille s'écrivait indifféremment "McPhail" ou "MacPhail" dans les journaux.
