Born in Poland as Patryk Śliz. Lived in an orphanage until the age of two before being adopted by a Swedish family.
When he was 10 his adoptive father died of a lung cancer within two months. After this grief Stefan becalme agressive and had trouble at school. Ice hockey helped him to focus his energy.
Flexible goalie with fine mobility. Vocal on the ice, communicating with his defensemen.
Improved his skating in later years. Had a winning attitude.
Drafted in the NHL by Detroit Red Wings in 2000. Only served two stints on the bench as a backup in Detroit (2006/07).
That year he was interviewed by a Polish newspaper and said his biological mother could contact him. She did it two months later. They only communicated through e-mail because they didn't have a common language (Stefan spoke Swedish and English, his mother spoke Polish and German).
Died when jet carrying the entire Yaroslavl Lokomotiv team crashed on takeoff.
His number one jersey was retired by HV-71. In 2013 a street in Jönköping was named in his honor, the street leads to the ice hockey arena.
His son Herman, who was 4 when his father died, also became an ice hockey goaltender. Famous hockey artist David Gunnarsson, an old friend of his father, paints his masks for free.

Né en Pologne sous le nom de Patryk Śliz mais abandonné par sa mère qui ne pensait pas pouvoir l'élever seule. En orphelinat jusqu'à ses deux ans où il fut adopté par un couple suédois de Jönköping, Jens et Anita Liv.
Lorsque Stefan avait 10 ans, son père adoptif décéda en deux mois d'un cancer du poumon. Après ce deuil, il devint agressif et eut des problèmes à l'école, mais le hockey l'aida à concentrer son énergie.
Gardien flexible avec une bonne mobilité. Il donnait de la voix avec ses défenseurs. Il améliora son patinage en fin de carrière.
Attitude de gagnant avec une horreur de la défaite dans le moindre exercice.
Drafté en NHL par les Red Wings de Detroit en 2000, il ne passa que deux rencontres comme doublure sur le banc de Detroit en 2006/07.
Il a repris contact avec sa mère biologique une fois adulte, mais uniquement par e-mail, n'ayant pas de langue commune (suédois et anglais pour Stefan, polonais et allemand pour sa mère).
Il décéda dans l'accident d'avion qui décima l'équipe du Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
Son numéro 1 fut retiré par le HV-71. En 2013 la rue qui amène à la patinoire de Jönköping fut rebaptisée en son nom.
Son fils Herman, qui avait 4 ans à la mort de son père, est aussi devenu gardien de hockey sur glace. Le célèbre artiste de hockey David Gunnarsson lui peint gratuitement ses masques en souvenir de son amitié avec son père.
