He grew up as the oldest of six children, five of them boys.
First skated when he was 18 months old. At age 10 he played hockey against 14 year-olds.
Linseman was a pesky type of player and one of the top agitators in the NHL during the 1980s.
The nickname “The Rat” was first given to him by Bobby Clarke, Philadelphia's captain, who thought Linseman's low-slung skating style made him look like a rat, both by his appearance and the way he played.
He frustrated opponents, leading them to take penalties.
A Brad Marchand type of player. As he matured, his antagonistic role diminished a bit.
He was an aggressive playmaker and a fine, very shifty skater. Persistent checker.
Good on faceoffs and a decent penalty killer in later years. Battled hard in the corners.
He won the Stanley Cup in 1984 with Edmonton Oilers, scoring the Stanley Cup clinching goal.
Retired in 1992. He used his education at Queen’s University between and went on to work in real estate, owning Newland Development Associates, LLC.

Linseman était un joueur hargneux, l'un des plus grands agitateurs de la NHL dans les années 1980.
Le surnom de “Rat” lui fut donné par le capitaine de Philadelphie, Bobby Clarke, qui trouvait que le style de patinage bas de Linseman le faisait ressembler à un rat, à la fois dans son apparence et sa façon de jouer.
Il frustrait énormément les adversaires, les poussant à la faute.
Un style de jeu à la Brad Marchand. En prenant de l'âge, son style s'est légèrement assagi.
Créateur de jeu agressif et patineur très agile. Persistant au marquage.
Bon aux mises au jeu et en infériorité numérique dans les dernières années. Très combatif dans les coins.
Vainqueur de la Coupe Stanley 1984 avec les Oilers d'Edmonton, auteur du but décisif du titre.
Retraité en 1992. Il a suivi des études à l'Université du Queen’s et travailla dans l'immobilier, comme propriétaire de Newland Development Associates, LLC.
807 points (256+551) en 860 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
