Began skating at the age of four. Grew up rooting for the Toronto Maple Leafs and had Doug Gilmour as his favorite player.
During his younger years he tried to pattern his goaltending after Patrick Roy.
Excellent size and very good puckhandler. Very quick and agile for a goaltender of his size.
Goalie playing the angles well. Challenging shooters and covering most of the net thanks to his size.
Confident goalie when at his best. Not the best conditioned athlete in his early years, but improved in that department.
Tendency to drop to his knees too early.
Earned the nickname of “Hamburglar” for his obsession of eating McDonald’s hamburgers when coming to North America.
Finnish goaltender of the year in 2002 and 2003.
Voted as the best goaltender at the 2007 World Championships.

Il commença à patiner à quatre ans. Il a grandi en observant les Maple Leafs de Toronto et avec Doug Gilmour pour joueur favori.
Durant sa jeunesse, il tenta de s'inspirer de Patrick Roy.
D'excellente taille (193 cm) avec une bonne maîtrise du palet. Très rapide et agile pour un gardien de son gabarit.
Gardien qui protège bien ses angles. Il met au défi les attaquants et couvre à merveille sa cage du fait de sa carrure.
Confiant quand il est à son meilleur. Sa condition physique était perfectible au début de sa carrière, mais s'est améliorée.
Tendance à se mettre sur les genoux trop rapidement.
Il eut le surnom d'“Hamburglar” du fait de son obsession à manger des hamburgers McDonald’s quand il était en Amérique du Nord.
Gardien finlandais de l'année en 2002 et 2003.
Désigné meilleur gardien des Mondiaux 2007.
91,2% d'arrêts et 2,70 buts encaissés par match en 649 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
