Born and grew up in Montréal as a big fan of Jean Béliveau who later became his teammate.
French speaking and didn’t learn English until he played as a pro in the late 1960s.
He was a member of the "Big Three" with fellow defensemen Larry Robinson and Serge Savard, and was a key contributor in the six Stanley Cup titles that Montreal Canadiens won in the 1970s.
Lapointe had a good slapshot from the point and quarterbacked power-plays very well.
He was also known for his stiff body-checks that stopped opponents in their tracks.
Off the ice he was known as a person with a great sense of humour, pulling pranks all the time.
Retired in 1983/84. Following his retirement, he stayed involved with hockey.
He was a general manager in the QMJHL, coached and served as an NHL-scout.
Later served as Coordinator of Amateur Scouting with the NHL's Minnesota Wild.
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Francophone, il ne parlait pas anglais avant son passage chez les pros à la fin des années 1960.
L'un des membres du "Big Three" avec les défenseurs Larry Robinson et Serge Savard, il fut l'un des grands contributeurs des six coupes Stanley remportées par le Canadien dans les années 1970.
Lapointe possédait un excellent lancer frappé et pilotait à merveille les jeux de puissance.
Il était également connu pour ses mises en échec rudes qui arrêtaient les adversaires dans leurs courses.
Hors glace il avait la réputation d'un homme plein d'humour, blagueur en permanence.
Retraité en 1983/84. Il resta investi dans le hockey après sa retraite.
Il fut manager général dans la LHJMQ, entraîneur et recruteur NHL.
Il fut également coordinateur du recrutement amateur pour le Wild de Minnesota.
Intronisé au Hockey Hall of Fame.
622 points (171+451) en 894 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
