Born in the Seces Parish in Latvia, then known as the Courland Governorate which was part of the Russian Empire. Nicknamed „Mazais Kanadietis“ (Small Canuck).
The backbone of the Latvian national team in the 1930s and the best pre-war goalie in Latvia.
Agile and calm goaltender who was absolutely fearless. Represented Latvia 19 times.
First appeared on the national team at the World Academic Winter Games in 1933.
Injured his hand just prior to the 1939 World Championships, and missed the tournament.
Latvian ice hockey champion three times. Played his last international game for Latvia in 1940.
In 1944 Lapainis joined the Latvian Legion and was soon captured by the Red Army.
After the war, he was forced to work under the supervision of the Soviet authorities.
He was employed in the Nevdubstroy village in the Leningrad Oblast (today Kirov), where a thermal power plant was restored.
In 1946/1947 Lapainis returned to the ice.
He played for Dinamo Riga in the first Soviet hockey championship.
Unfortunately he died during an appendicitis surgery in Riga at the age of 33.
Some sources have him incorrectly born on September 10 and passing away in September 1974.

Ne dans la paroisse de Seces en Lettonie, alors connu sous le gouvernorat de Courlande qui faisait partie de l'empire russe. Surnommé „Mazais Kanadietis“ ("le petit Canadien").
Colonne vertébrale de la sélection lettone dans les années 1930 et meilleur gardien du pays avant la Seconde guerre mondiale.
Gardien calme et agile qui avait un sang-froid total. 19 sélections en équipe de Lettonie.
Il apparut avec la sélection nationale pour la première fois à l'occasion des Universiades d'hiver 1933.
Il se blessa à la main juste avant les Mondiaux de 1939, ce qui lui fit manquer le tournoi.
Trois fois champion de Lettonie. Il joua sa dernière rencontre internationale en 1940.
En 1944 Lapainis rejoit la légion lettonne et fut capturé par l'armée rouge.
Après la guerre, il fut conduit au travail forcé sous la surveillance des autorités soviétiques.
Il fut employé dans le village de Nevdubstroy (aujourd'hui Kirov) dans l'oblast de Leningrad, où une centrale thermique a été restaurée.
En 1946/1947 Lapainis revint au hockey sur glace.
Il joua pour le Dinamo Riga dans le premier championnat soviétique.
Malheureusement il décéda au cours d'une opération de l'appendicite à Riga à 33 ans.
Certaines sources citent par erreur une date de naissance au 10 septembre et un décès en septembre 1974.
