Blueliner who played with a lot of poise. Good at making crisp hard passes out of his own zone. Well developed hockey sense. Handled the puck well under pressure. Useful on the powerplay.
His grandfather and his father were Dynamo Moscow fans. He entered Dynamo ice hockey school at seven in December 1979. When he came out of it in 1989 he could not enter even Dynamo-2 team. He had a year off from hockey at 18 while studying at university. Famous coach Nikolai Epstein brought him back to hockey and helped him to get some confidence.
Went to North America when he was 20 but he was a very lightweighted (72 kg) fourth division player then and could play only in the ECHL.
He was smoking when he was a young ice hockey player but got rid of this habit afterwards.
He wasn't the most talented ice hockey player but he developed later. Called into the national team at 25.
Drafted in the the NHL at 28 when he had more bulk (89 kg). He crossed the ocean one year later.
Retired in 2007. He did some play analysis during game intermissions on Russian television.

Il fumait dans sa jeunesse et ne se débarrassa que plus tard de cette mauvaise habitude.
Pas le plus talentueux, il se développa sur le tard. Appelé en équipe nationale à 25 ans.
Drafté en NHL à 28 ans, il traversa l'Atlantique un an plus tard.
Retraité en 2007. Amateur de photographie. Remarqué pour ses analyses d'actions pendant les tiers-temps à la télévision russe.
