First played ice hockey at the age of eight. Big (6'2/188cm and 218lbs/99 kg), strong and burly center with soft hands and cleverness. Called "The Finnish Tumba" after the legendary Swedish player. The weakest aspect of his game was his skating.
Attended Detroit Red Wings training camp in 1969, but didn’t play in the NHL until 1981. Detroit were impressed by the youngster and offered him a spot on their farm team, which was an accomplishment at that time for a European player, but he opted to return home. Later played in WHA (Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Cowboys) and the NHL (Colorado Rockies) and is generally regarded as one of the best Finnish players of all time, despite a subtle playing career in North America. Won the WHA Avco Cup in 1976.
Represented Finland 186 times (60+45). Retired in 1983. Went on to coach Ässät and the Finnish U20 and also served as a club president. Worked with insurance.
Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ce colosse (1,88m, 99kg) au regard ténébreux (pour un Finlandais) commance le hockey à huit ans. Il y fait montre de mains habiles, d'intelligence, de résistance et de rudesse. On le surnomme bien vite le "Tumba finlandais" (en référence à l'idole des foules suédoises). Manquait de patinage.
Invité au camp d'entraînement des Red Wings en 1969, il fut convié à intégrer leur équipe-ferme, ce qui était déjà rare pour un Européen dans la NHL de l'époque, mais Ketola préféra rentrer en Finlande plutôt que poireauter à la porte des grands. Il jouera tout de même en NHL "post-réunification" en 1981 avec les Colorado Rockies, après avoir joué en WHA chez les Winnipeg Jets et les Calgary Coyotes. Remporta d'ailleurs la coupe Avco en 1976.
Considéré comme un des meilleurs joueurs finlandais de son temps, jusqu'à la fin de sa carrière à 35 ans, et même de l'histoire, il compte 186 sélections avec les Leijonat (105 points, 60+45). Devenu entraîneur et dirigeant des Ässät Pori, il a pris des fonctions d'encadrement chez les U20 finlandais. Travailla aussi dans le domaine des assurances.
Intronisé parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijona, numéro 72).
14 points marqués (5+9) en 44 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
