Fast and determined forward who always entered the offensive zone with speed. Formed a fearsome line in the early 1950s together with Keijo Kuusela and Esko Tie.
League top goal scorer on four occasions. Also had most points in the league on two occasions. Played 146 league games, scoring 243 (179+64) points. Represented Finland 56 times (40+4).
Official Finnish yearbooks have Karumaa scoring 3 goals in the 1949 World Championships, with controversy surrounding the goalscorers against Belgium. Retired in 1959.
Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Attaquant rapide et audacieux dont les fulgurantes entrées en zone offensive étaient la marque de fabrique, surtout au début des années 50 quand il formait trio avec Keijo Kuusela et Esko Tie. Quatre fois meilleur buteur du championnat finlandais, deux fois meilleur pointeur. 243 points (179+64) en 146 matches de SM-sarja, 44 points (40+4) en 56 sélections avec la Finlande.
Les annuaires finlandais officiels attribuent à Karumaa trois buts lors du Mondial 1949 avec une controverse autour des buteurs contre la Belgique.
Retraité en 1959. Intronisé parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijona, numéro 14).
