Technically skilled player who worked hard all over the ice, both offensively and defensively. Loyal team player. His father was an elite football player who even represented Sweden. His father would have liked to see him play football as well, but it didn’t take long time for Stefan to chose ice hockey.
Grew up admiring Vyacheslav Starshinov. Shortly after his first World Championship tournament in 1969 he was involved in a serious car accident. His car collided with a truck, killing his friend instantly. Stefan himself was in a coma for five days, miraculously escaping with a serious concussion and facial injuries. Retired in 1981.

Stefan Karlsson alliait une technique de pointe à un comportement de travailleur loyal et acharné aux quatre coins de la glace. Fils d'un joueur de foot de haut niveau (Einar), international suédois, qui aurait bien voulu le voir gambader sur du gazon plutôt que sur un glaçon. Raté.
Raté car le gamin voua très tôt une grande admiration pour Vyacheslav Starshinov, qu'il put croiser dès son premier championnat du monde en 1969. Ce Mondial faillit bien être le seul pour "Lill-Prosten" qui, quelques jours après, fut victime d'un grave accident de voiture quand son véhicule percuta un camion. Son ami et passager mourut sur le coup. Stefan s'en sortit miraculeusement, après cinq jours de coma, avec un sévère traumatisme crânien et des balafres. Joua ensuite jusqu'en 1981.
