Played ice hockey in Melbourne for Pirates ICH and was the playing coach for Demons ICH. In total he appeared in 143 games for Demons in the years 1946 to 1949 and 1954 to 1964.
He was the vice-captain for Australia in the 1960 Olympics and played in the first two World Championships for Australia. Captained Australia at age 38 in the 1964 Olympic Qualifications. The Russell Jones Premiership Cup is awarded annually in his honour to the IHV Premier A League Champions.

A toujours joué à Melbourne, d'abord chez les Pirates (1949-1954), ensuite chez les Demons, dont il sera entraîneur-joueur (143 matches entre 1946 et 1949, puis entre 1954 et 1964)
Vice-capitaine de la sélection australienne lors des JO 1960. Également sélectionné lors des deux premiers Mondiaux disputés par son pays. Encore capitaine de sa sélection à 38 ans, à l'occasion des éliminatoires (perdues) pour les JO 1964. Le champion de "l'IHV Premier A League" (qui n'est pas le principal championnat australien) reçoit chaque année le "Russell Jones Premiership", trophée nommé en son honneur.
