His brother Ryan Johnson was also an NHL player. Small, quick and elusive. Terrific vision on the ice and soft hands. Often darted in and out of traffic with the puck, effectively using opposing defenders as screens. Fine work ethic.
In 2006 he signed a contract wth the Detroit Red Wings. In September, during a routine preseason physical, an EKG test returned abnormal heart results. Johnson had further testing, and eventually decided to retire before training camp.
Tragically he committed suicide by shooting himself. He was 48. He had a wife and two children.

Pas très grand, rapide et difficile à capturer, Greg Johnson avait une excellente vision du jeu et des mains qui suivaient. Capable de s'extraire comme une flèche du trafic, puck en crosse, en se servant des adversaires comme d'écrans. Athlète sérieux.
En 2006, en resignant avec les Red Wings, il se soumit aux habituels tests médicaux de présaison. Un électrocardiogramme émit des résultats anormaux, et après d'autres examens, Greg Johnson décida de ne pas prendre de risque mais plutôt sa retraite.
