His father Stanley Johnson [1881-1948] was born in Manchester, England. His mother Helen Mary Armstrong McLaren [b.1886]. Gord Johnson grew up in Westmount, QC. Attended McGill University. Also went to Trinity College (Oxford Univ.) between 1924-28 and captained the hockey team.
Johnson was a slight, fair-haired and considered as a very speedy skater. Smart player. Captained the Manchester ice hockey team in the mid 1930s.
He was the nephew of the Dean of Canterbury. His wife was a Russian countess (Tatiana Vorontsov-Dashkov) who had fled from the Bolsheviks’ during the Russian Revolution. He later worked in the engineering business in Manchester. His firm, C. H. Johnson & Sons, Ltd., claimed on their letter-head to be "Experts in Labour Saving Machinery".

Fils du Mancunien Stanley Johnson (1881-1948) et d'Helen Mary Armstrong McLaren (1886-?), Gord Johnson grandit à Westmount, au Québec, et fit d'abord ses études à la McGill University avant de rejoindre en 1924 le Trinity College d'Oxford où il resta jusqu'en 1928. Fut le capitaine de leur équipe de hockey.
Élancé, le blond Johnson avait la réputation d'être rapide sur patins et intelligent sur la glace. Se fit connaître en tant que capitaine de Manchester dans les années trente.
Il était le neveu du Doyen de Canterbury (un ponte de l'Église anglicane) et épousa Tatiana Vorontsov-Dashkov, une comtesse russe qui avait fui la Révolution d'octobre. Johnson fit carrière dans l'ingénierie. Sur les papiers à en-tête de son entreprise C.H.Johnson & Sons installée à Manchester, on pouvait lire (en anglais) "spécialistes en mécanismes économisant le travail".
