Brother of Prince Johnson. Son of Alfred Melvin Johnson and Mabel Ione Frances Sybil DeLapp. His paternal grandfather was from Sweden and the grandmother from Norway.
He sharpened some of his hockey skills in Canada before enrolling at University of North Dakota. He was an outstanding playmaker, an all-around fine player and a very potent scorer. He was a member of the 1949 and 1950 U.S. National teams in world tourneys. His stats are often mixed up with his brother. Graduated in 1953 with a degree from the Business School. Later played for Worcester Warriors.
