Grew up in a typical working class family in Stockholm. Both his parents were from Skaraborg in the Southeastern part of Sweden. Had three older sisters and three older brothers. He started playing competitive hockey at the age of 14 in 1934 for the hockey club Nordia, then continued playing for IK Sture and AIK.
He came to Hammarby IF in 1945/46, first as a hammer thrower, winning one Stockholm championship (DM) by throwing 48,50 metres. He soon joined the Hammarby IF hockey team. Not a fast skater but a very robust player who didn’t step aside when the game got chippy.

Enfant d'une famille modeste d'ouvriers venus de la ville de Skaraborg dans le sud-est de la Suède pour travailler dans la capitale. Le couple eut, avant Rune qui fut leur dernier enfant, trois filles et trois garçons. Rune découvre le hockey à 14 ans avec le club de Nordia, puis cultive ses talents au IK Sture et à l'AIK.
Rejoint Hammarby IF en 1945, d'abord en tant que lanceur du marteau où il fut déclaré champion de Stockholm pour un jet à 48,50 mètres (à l'époque, le record du monde masculin était à 59 mètres). Fut bien vite enrôlé par la section hockey du HIF pour occuper sa bleue. Pas rapide sur ses patins mais très robuste et décisif quand la partie devenait rugueuse.
