Began playing ice hockey at the age of six in Kladno. A tireless worker who scored the majority of his goals while battling for rebounds in front of the goal. His North American style of play was the major reason to why he became the first Czechoslovakian born-and-trained player to skate in the NHL in 1969/70. He was described by NHL-experts as a Claude Provost with a touch of Ralph Backström. He was known to have played his entire career with a straight stick.
In 442 league games he scored 302 goals and 407 points. Managed to score 83 goals in 134 games for Czechoslovakia. Played mostly on a line with František Ševčík and Jozef Golonka on the national team. Got his nickname Brambor (Potato) from his teammate Stanislav Bacílek, who once told him that he stayed in front of the goal like a sack of potato. Retired in 1975.
Coached for more than 25 years, including the Swiss national team. Also worked as a player agent. Was an avid pilot. Killed in a plane accident when his newly bought one seater ultralight plane crashed.
Inducted into the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.

Commence le hockey sur glace à six ans dans la ville de Kladno. Jiřík était un joueur dur au mal qui inscrivait des buts de raccroc, souvent sur des rebonds bataillés devant la cage. Un style de jeu très nord-américain qui lui valut justement d'être le premier Tchécoslovaque à jouer en NHL. On le décrivait comme un mélange de Claude Provost et de Ralph Backstrom. Il a joué toute sa carrière avec une crosse droite.
Cela lui permit en tout cas d'inscrire 302 buts (407 points) en 442 matches de championnat, puis 83 buts en 134 sélections avec son équipe nationale. Il y partageait souvent la ligne de František Ševčík et Jozef Golonka mais c'est à Stanislav Bacílek qu'il doit son surnom, "patate" (Brambor en tchèque), car il donnait l'impression de se poser devant le but adverse comme un sac de pommes de terre.
Après sa retraite de joueur prise à 36 ans, il sera entraîneur pendant un bon quart de siècle, notamment de la Nati suisse. Également agent de joueurs et pilote d'avion. C'est d'ailleurs en vol qu'il mourut, à 72 ans, dans un accident d'ULM.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey tchèque.
Aucun point en 3 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
Des dates de naissance au 10 février 1939 ou au 10 décembre 1939 apparaissent aussi, mais son passeport indique 10 décembre 1938.
