Began playing as a goaltender at the age of six. But he soon became a forward instead. Was chosen as the Rookie of the Year in Finland 1979.
Set a league record in Finland when he scored 93 points in 1986/87. Scored 1216 points (456+760) in 991 career games. Had a goal and four assists in his last WC game in 1989 (vs USA).
Retired in 1996 after two seasons playing in France and became a successful ice hockey coach. Coached in SM-Liiga (TPS, Kärpät, HIFK) and the KHL before being at the helm of the Finnish national team between 2014 and 2016. Then moved to Switzerland where he became NLA champion with SC Bern in 2017.
First foreigner to coach Czech national team in modern history.
Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

S'installe dans les cages à six ans mais passe vite en attaque. Débutant de l'année du championnat finlandais en 1979.
Son total de 93 points en SM-Liiga 1986-87 fut longtemps un record. 1216 points (456+760) en 991 matches. Quitta la sélection par la grande porte en inscrivant un but et collectant quatre assists lors de son dernier match (sans enjeu) en championnat du monde (1989, contre les USA).
Prit sa retraite en 1996 après deux saisons à Rouen pour devenir un entraîneur à succès. D'abord en SM-Liiga (TPS, Kärpät, HIFK), en KHL et sur le banc de la sélection finlandaise entre 2014 et 2016. Passé depuis en LNA où il a été sacré champion de Suisse avec Berne en 2017.
Premier étranger à entraîner l'équipe nationale tchèque dans l'histoire moderne.
Honoré parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijonat, n°123).
15 points marqués (9+6) en 37 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
