The road form the city to his home passed by the ice rink. His brother also played ice hockey as a goaltender.
Mihai Flamaropol convinced him to come to Steaua at 19. He lived by his uncle when arriving in Bucharest.
Became an ice hockey coach after his playing career.
Coached Romania at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics together with Ion Tiron.
Also coached Romania in the World Championships between 1976 and 1979, including the A-Pool in 1977, Romania's only World Championship appearance since the 1940s. One of the games was a huge upset win over the US team.
After the 1980 Olympics he emigrated after a trip with his wife to West Germany. He didn’t plan to defect, but having trouble to find work after the Olympics, he decided to stay abroad.
Soon he moved to Spain and Bilbao where he coached the local ice hockey team. Also assistant coach for Spain at the 1982 Pool C World Championships.
After a few years in Spain he moved to Switzerland and remained there. Coached several club teams in Switzerland, both at the junior and senior level. Obtained Swiss citizenship. Moved back to Romania in 2013.
Named coach of the Romanian national team in 2014 but suffered a stroke in March 2014 and was admitted to Spitalul Elias in Bucharest.

Devenu entraîneur de hockey après sa retraite de joueur. Diplômé de l'académie d'éducation physique et sportive en 1964.
Sélectionneur de la Roumanie entre les Jeux Olympiques de 1976 et ceux de 1980 avec Ion Tiron.
Il en était également le sélectionneur pour le mondial élite de 1977, unique apparition des Roumains à ce niveau depuis les années 1940. L'une des rencontres s'est achevée par une incroyable victoire surprise face aux États-Unis.
Après les Jeux olympiques 1980 il émigra lors d'un voyage avec sa femme en Allemagne de l'Ouest. Il n'avait pas planifié cet exil, mais comme il avait du mal à retrouver du travail, il décida de rester à l'étranger.
Il partit rapidement pour Bilbao où il entraîna l'équipe locale de hockey. Assistant-coach de l'Espagne à l'occasion des Mondiaux C de 1982.
Après quelques années en Espagne il s'installa en Suisse et y entraîna plusieurs équipes, tant au niveau junior que senior. Il obtint la nationalité suisse.
Il retourna en Roumanie en 2013 et fut désigné sélectionneur de la sélection roumaine en 2014 mais fit un AVC en mars 2014, il fut alors admis à l'hôpital Elias de Bucarest.
