Born in Stražisko near Prostějov. Began playing organized ice hockey at the late age of 16.
Grew up admiring Vlastimil Bubnik.
Hrbatý was known to have played his entire career with a straight stick, and was only one of three players in the Czechoslovakian league during the 1970s to use one (also Josef Ulrych and Jaroslav Jiřík).
Earned the nickname ”Rychlík z Vysočiny” (The Express Train from the Highlands) from a journalist for his incredible speed.
Very proficient at going around opposing defensemen on his backhand in full speed.
Due to his straight stick he had great control of the puck on his backhand, thus using it frequently.
Very fair player and seldom penalized.
Played 572 league games, scoring 446 points (222+224).
Played briefly on the ”H-Line” with the Holík brothers.
Also played alongside Milan Novy and Josef Augusta.
Won seven league titles with Dukla Jihlava and three Spengler Cups.
Retired in 1980 and became a hockey coach.
Stayed in the Dukla Jihlava organization for 45 years.
His sons and grandsons also played the game competitively.
Passed away after a short illness in a Jihlava hospital.

Né à Stražisko près de Prostějov. Il a commencé à jouer au hockey en club à l’âge tardif de 16 ans.
Il a grandi en admirant Vlastimil Bubnik.
Hrbaty est connu pour avoir joué toute sa carrière avec une crosse droite, c'était l’un des trois seuls joueurs dans le championnat tchécoslovaque des années 1970 à en utiliser une (les autres étaient Josef Ulrich et Jaroslav Jiřík).
Il gagne le surnom de ”Rychlík z Vysočiny” (le train express des hautes plaines) grâce à sa vitesse incroyable.
Il savait contourner les défenseurs adverses à haute vitesse.
Avec sa crosse non incurvée, il avait un très bon contrôle de la rondelle en revers et l'utilisait fréquemment.
Joueur très propre et très rarement pénalisé.
572 matchs de championnat tchécoslovaque, 446 points (222+224).
Il a brièvement joué sur la ligne H avec les frères Holik.
Il a aussi joué avec Milan Novy et Josef Augusta.
7 fois champion avec le Dukla Jihlava et 3 fois vainqueur de la coupe Spengler.
Retraité en 1980 et devenu entraîneur, il est resté dans l'organisation du Dukla Jihlava pendant 45 ans.
Son fils et son petit-fils ont aussi joué au hockey.
Décédé après une brève maladie à l'hôpital de Jihlava.
