Began playing ice hockey at the age of eight as a kid for SONP Poldi Kladno. First played senior hockey for Kladno at the age of 15.
Was tutored by his defensive partner in the early years, Stanislav Bacílek, a former national team player.
Later in Sparta Praha he was paired with František Tikal, another national team player.
Hardshooting defenseman and a good point man on powerplays where he was used often to quarterback the plays.
Hard slapshot and wristshot. Very robust player and always in good shape. Strong along the boards.
Represented Czechoslovakia 152 times (23 goals). First paired with Jan Suchý and later Jiří Bubla.
Played a total of 514 league games, scoring 83 goals. Two time league champion.
In the late 1960s, Scotty Bowman tried to sign him for St. Louis Blues in the NHL, but back then the communist countries did not give permission to such young players to leave.
Retired in 1978 after having been bothered by a bad back for a few years.
Went on to coach. He had good memories from Grenoble Olympic games (he had been elected best defenceman in his first ever international tournament at 21 !) and coached CSG Grenoble from 1982 to 1985.
Inducted into the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.

Commence le hockey à l’âge de 8 ans pour le SONP Poldi Kladno et intègre l'équipe première à 15 ans.
Son premier partenaire de défense, l'ancien international Stanislav Bacílek, le prend sous son aile.
Il part à Prague pour étudier à la faculté d'éducation physique et rejoint le Sparta Prague où il fait équipe avec František Tikal, autre ex-international.
Défenseur au tir puissant, bon à la pointe en supériorité numérique où il est souvent utilisé pour organiser le jeu.
Son slap mais aussi son tir du poignet sont puissants. Joueur très robuste et toujours en bonne forme. Fort le long des bandes.
152 sélections avec la Tchécoslovaquie (23 buts). D’abord apparié à Jan Suchý puis à Jiří Bubla.
514 matchs de championnat tchécoslovaque, 83 buts. Deux fois champion.
À la fin des années 1960, Scotty Bowman essaye de le faire signer aux Blues de Saint-Louis mais les pays communistes ne donnaient pas l'autorisation aux jeunes joueurs d’y aller.
Retraité en 1978 après avoir connu des soucis de dos les dernières années. Marié, deux filles.
Les Jeux olympiques de Grenoble lui ayant laissé de bons souvenirs (il y fut élu meilleur défenseur pour son premier tournoi international à 21 ans !), il part entraîner le CSG Grenoble de 1982 à 1985.
Introduit au Temple de la renommée du hockey tchèque.
